The STEM subcommittee of the Partnership for Continued Learning was established by section 3326.01 of Am Sub. H.B. 119 in June 2007. In accordance with Am Sub. H.B. 119, the STEM Subcommittee of the Partnership for Continued Learning shall:
Select an Ohio-based nonprofit enterprise to assist in supporting the strategic and operational coordination of the public and private STEM education initiatives and resources focused on (1) curriculum development, (2) instruction, (3) assessment, (4) teacher quality enhancement, (5) leadership recruitment and training, and (6) community engagement. The selected nonprofit enterprise must have proven ability to accumulate resources to enhance education quality across the educational continuum from preschool to college. It also must have experience in large-scale management of science and technology resources, and have a documented institutional mission to advance STEM education. Authorize and award grants to establish STEM schools through a Request for Proposals (RFP) process. For this purpose, the subcommittee is charged with determining the criteria for the proposals; accept and evaluate the proposals; and decide which proposals to approve to become a STEM school and receive grants. In making this decision, the subcommittee must consider geographic regions of the state. It may approve up to five STEM schools to operate in the school year that begins July 1, 2008. Award grants to support the operation of STEM programs of excellence to serve students in any grades kindergarten through eight, using a RFP process for this purpose.
